THE INVISIBLE WORKFORCE: HOW TO VALUE WOMEN’S ROLE IN SANITATION?

Like in many other sectors, women in sanitation have been mostly recognised as beneficiaries, users, or participants. However, there are a range of women working across the sanitation chain, in public, private and informal settings.

This learning workshop will provide an opportunity to recognise the role and contributions of women in sanitation, using digital campaigns as one of the tools for advocacy. It aims to enrich the understanding of the challenges and barriers faced by women working in sanitation as well as discuss options to improve their working conditions.

Convenor: The World Bank Co-convenor: IIHS

The occupational health and safety of sanitation workers continues to remain a key concern. It is influenced by the informal nature of their work, as well as larger structural issues. Safety challenges also differ according to the role played by the workers.

Shifting the focus beyond mere provisioning of PPE, this learning workshop aims to enable deeper discussions around safety. It will draw on work done on the ground in India, as well as from international studies, to highlight the structural issues around safety and its shared responsibility. The session will offer a space to share challenges and innovations, while aiming to find a way forward towards improving occupational health and safety of sanitation workers.
